Are you tired of applying layers of primer and mascara, only to have your natural lashes fall out? Which mascara should you use; longer? Volume? Which color? Can you use more than one? Stop clumping your lashes with more wax, pigments and preservatives.
Treat yourself to lash extensions that not only look natural, they won’t ruin the natural health of your lashes.
Eyelash extensions can last up to three or four weeks and, can be worn in the ocean, they’re a great alternative to waterproof mascara. However, if you’re going to be swimming in a chlorinated pool regularly, you might need to replace them more frequently.
Eyelash extensions aren’t the same as false eyelashes you get at the local store or used to do yourself with glue strips. These are semi-permanent lashes applied by a professional who hand-glues the extensions on top of your natural lashes. They are customizable and actually look real.
Be sure to get your extensions from a reputable, trained professional (usually and esthetician or cosmetologist). As with other services and products, you get what you pay for and you don’t want to skimp here.
A few tips when making an appointment; Ask the salon or professional, about the ingredients in the lash adhesive. If they can’t answer your question, don’t book the appointment. And if the adhesive contains formaldehyde, a known eye irritant, causing redness, itchy and swollen eyelids, definitely cancel the appointment. Choose a salon that uses glue or adhesives made with butylcyanoacrylate and octylcyanoacrylate, they are less toxic to the eye area, says Zaina Al-Mohtaseb, MD, assistant professor of ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
The type of lashes you get depends on the length and strength of your natural lashes. If you apply and wear lashes that are too long or too thick, this can damage your natural lashes. There is also a variety of material you can use such as; synthetic mink or synthetic silk. Mink is usually more expensive, feels softer and looks more natural. However, some synthetics, which are customizable, can also look and feel natural and can vary in price.
One size does not fit all. Next, you want to take into account face shape, bone structure and natural lashes when considering how many lashes, the density, curl and length of your extensions. Your professional should help you decide on these factors.
When people notice you, the first thing they notice is usually your eyes.
The first 24-hours of getting your extensions are crucial; don’t cry and minimize getting them wet. Also, try not exercising or visit a spa in the first 24-hours as this can cause irritation and cause them to fall out. Be gentle with your lashes.
You may not even want to wear mascara after getting eyelash extensions because they will be longer and fuller themselves and when you attempt to remove mascara at the end of the day, you can actually cause your extensions to break from the friction of the makeup remover. As for eyeliner you want to avoid using a crema-based formula as they often contain oils and waxes that can break down lash glue.
As with your skin, be gentle when using cleansers and other products when washing your face. Other products may contain ingredients that can weaken the bond of your lash extensions and cause them to shed prematurely. If you’re wearing eye-makeup, use oil-free pads and gently swipe downward. Also, avoid rubbing or tugging on your eyes. Your extensions can get tangles, so it’s required that you gently brush your lashes with a clean spoolie brush (a disposable mascara brush).
