Microneedling is gaining mass popularity. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure using a microneedling ‘pen’ device made up of very fine needles that are used to puncture the skin at various depths & speeds to create a controlled skin injury. Each puncture creates a channel that stimulates elastin, neovascularization and neocollagenesis (collagen growth) to fill these microscopic wounds resulting in dermal thickness/plumping. Results of microneedling include decreased pore size, smoother, healthier, firmer, more youthful looking skin. The prospect of multiple needle wounds might sound scary, but don’t be afraid! The procedure is painless & the results are amazing!
The microneedling procedure can be done with or without platelet-rich plasma (PRP). When the procedure is preformed without PRP, different serums are used that target certain skin issues such as large pores, wrinkles, uneven texture, sun damage, lax skin, acne, scaring, stretch marks, and/or hair loss.
Microneedling with PRP is also known as the “Vampire Facial”. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a highly concentrated autologous serum that is rich in growth factors and cytokines. These growth factors regulate and induce cell migration, attachment proliferation, and differentiation as well as promote extracellular matrix accumulation. The preparation of PRP begins with whole blood obtained peripherally from the patient by venipuncture. The blood sample is placed into the centrifuge where it is separated and PRP is obtained. The PRP is then used with microneedling. PRP promotes the regeneration process of soft tissue further stimulating the natural healing process and creation of collagen. PRP is also used to stimulate hair growth for those who suffer from unwanted hair loss.
Prior to the treatment avoid direct sun exposure or tanning, drink plenty of water and arrive with a bare clean face.
The procedure lasts about 30-45 minutes. Before treatment, the face is cleansed and a mild, topical numbing cream is applied. After allowing enough time to penetrate and numb the skin, the numbing cream is removed and microneedling can begin using PRP or another serum-like product.
Immediately after treatment, a cool mask is applied to help sooth any redness and irritation. The skin will be slightly pink and may feel slightly sunburned. For most people, recovery is approximately 24-72 hours. The body’s collagen production usually takes about 4-8 weeks, so improvements will continue over time. According to a 2008 study, skin treated with four microneedling sessions spaced one month apart produced up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin six months after completing treatment. Post treatment continue to drink plenty of water, avoid exfollients and acid based skincare products for 72 hours and always use a sunscreen that is SPF30 or greater.
Microneedling is a very safe procedure. It has been under the microscope lately due to the HIV spread caused by a clinic in New Mexico. The device used at Moore Road MediSpa comes with “one use” sterile needling tips. One tip used per person, then discarded. The device is also protected by “one use” removable sleeves. When microneedling with PRP, the PRP comes from the patient being treated only. It is done using each patients’ own blood product. PRP is NEVER under any circumstance shared.
Another important safety factor is professional training and certification. The professionals who preform the microneedling procedure at Moore Road MediSpa were trained and certified through an accredited medical training agency.
